MISSION CONTROL

THE DISCONNECT

The number of women choosing to pursue technology related fields is drastically disproportionate to the number of men those same fields. (NSF) Girls need more encouragement from a younger age to continue into the fields of Engineering and Computer Science throughout their education.

THE SOLUTION

Computer Science and Engineering industries can only benefit from an increase in the number of women in technology. Diversity in anything is critical to success. We aim to empower girls with the ability to make an informed choice about their future by exposing them to new technologies that interest them.

THE PLAN

Using the Arduino Lilypad developed by Leah Buechley, we will hold a workshop style event to teach girls new technologies that combine a bit of engineering, computer science and fashion. Constructing this event will be broken down into three parts:
  • Research & Development: Gaining a strong understanding of Arduino boards, how they work, and cool projects that can be done
  • Event & Team Organization: Getting girls, volunteers, sponsorship and a location requires some networking and social media prowess
  • Going Forward: For those interested in starting up their own workshops, a handy online guide to explain the process help
